Data center equipment-room retrofit cuts total energy use by over 40%

Passive Edge and Chufeng New Energy completed a data-center equipment-room retrofit with the Gudianbao cold-storage temperature-control system and Passive Edge ultra-high-conductivity all-solid PCM. The result: over 40% total energy savings and a four-hour cooling-interruption test that kept cabinet temperature in the safe range.

Gudianbao cold-storage temperature-control system installed in a data-center equipment room

Before the retrofit, the equipment room relied on a 2 HP air conditioner and used about 38 kWh per day for cooling. A power or air-conditioning failure could push cabinet temperature above 50°C, creating a direct risk to equipment uptime.

The project introduced a standardized Gudianbao cold-storage temperature-control system without replacing the original air-conditioning system. Passive Edge supplied the ultra-high-conductivity all-solid phase-change material inside the thermal buffer, while intelligent control coordinated charging, airflow, and cooling release.

After commissioning, daily cabinet temperature stayed around 32°C. In a four-hour cooling-interruption test, the cabinet remained within the safe range with only minor temperature fluctuation.

The air-conditioning load fell from about 38 kWh per day to 14-18 kWh per day. Including the new fan load, total equipment-room electricity settled at 20-23 kWh per day, delivering comprehensive savings of more than 40%.

For Passive Edge, the project validates an application path for ultra-high-conductivity all-solid PCM plus intelligent control in data centers, communication base stations, new energy infrastructure, and industrial energy-saving retrofits.
