PCM plates and modules for cold and heat storage

Encapsulated phase-change storage plates form the building blocks of stacked thermal cores and containerised storage units. Plate design, temperature range and system configuration depend on the model and project.

UltraST PCM conductive network and solid–liquid phase-change cycle
UltraST PCM phase-change heat transferThe conductive network accelerates heat transfer while the PCM absorbs heat and melts, then releases heat and solidifies in its target range. Animation is conceptual; actual behaviour varies by grade and operating conditions.

From a PCM plate to a storage module.

The plate stores energy, the core brings plates together, and the enclosure houses the integrated system. Choose the level that fits your target temperature and operating conditions.

  1. PCM storage plate

Phase-change material is encapsulated in a plate to store and release cooling or heat within its specified temperature range.

  2. Stacked thermal core

Multiple plates form an array matched to the heat-transfer structure and flow paths.

  3. Containerised storage unit

The core is housed in an enclosure and connected to heat exchange, circulation and control systems for the project.

Horizontally stacked PCM plates with water flowing parallel to the plate surfaces
Plate surfaces run parallel to the water flow through the channels; the final layout is project-specific.

Cold-chain transport

Faster thermal response. More time for your cargo.

UltraST combines a conductive composite network, shape stability and latent heat: heat reaches the material faster, cooling fits within limited packaging space, and liquid leakage paths are reduced. High-enthalpy, low-supercooling material selection matches storage capacity and conditioning temperature; validate heat transfer in the actual box, pallet shipper or vehicle.

Source: 5°C cold-chain PCM comparison report, March 2026, pp. 5, 8 and 9. Ambient 12°C; 45 L insulated boxes; three plates and 3.21 kg PCM per set; cargo probe inside a water bottle. 6°C is this comparison's threshold, not a universal compliance limit. Results apply to the tested samples and conditions, not every T3/T5 variant or transport route.

Selection and turnaround: validate the complete pack-out

Faster tempering before use
Time to warm to 0°C was 57.0 vs 129.5 min, from different starting temperatures of −15.8°C and −8.5°C. This is tempering, not recharge time. Daily turns and inventory costs require the full delivery, return and charging cycle.
Shape stability reduces liquid leakage risk
The solid-state composite reduces pathways for liquid seepage. Packaging still requires seal, drop and puncture validation. Food and pharmaceutical use must be assessed for the specific product and certification scope.
Match the route, not only box capacity
Provide cargo temperature limits, ambient profile, journey duration, payload, opening frequency and charging conditions. Passive Edge supplies materials, modules and data; box or vehicle partners integrate and validate the complete system.
